Experience and goals
What do you consider your most meaningful career accomplishment?
I earned my license as a massage therapist and eventually co-owner of Breathe Massage Therapy, PLLC in Delmar. Living and working in this community has given me a unique sense of the needs and expectations of our residents. My profession requires a level of trust from the public and I am proud of the results.
What skills do you bring to your tenure on the board?
As a business owner, I routinely navigate a budget and monitor expenses. My business requires our clients to trust us and expect compassion from our services. My professional success will certainly be an asset when interacting with the public and addressing their concerns.
What are your goals as a library board member?
My goals are to use my deep roots in the community to foster trust in the decisions of the library board and ensure that all residents of the town consider the library a reliable source of information and support.
Views about libraries
How does a public library best serve its community?
Public Libraries empower their communities to explore new ideas and experiences, support literacy to immigrants and provide a nurturing space for care givers with young children. Engaging seniors to enjoy social interaction will help prevent them from feeling isolated. A successful library serves everyone’s interests.
What are the most important issues facing public libraries today?
I am very concerned about the national trend regarding banning books that are considered unsuitable. No one has the right to censor reading material for any reason. This practice has increased significantly over the last few years. I will fight these attempts to control content reflecting human diversity.
How are public libraries changing? How can a library board expedite these changes?
Libraries are incorporating more technology, through apps and digital sharing. They are introducing community events to their activity schedules so neighbors can easily engage with each other. Library board members need to listen to the residents, hear what they need and work together to ensure its implementation.
How have libraries influenced your life?
I have always been an avid reader so I spent many hours as a child perusing the stacks at the Albany Public Library. The worlds I explored through literature and the joy it brought me influenced my decision to study English Literature in college and go on to a Masters Degree in English Education.
Views about this library
What do you like best about Bethlehem Public Library?
I have always loved the selection of audiobooks available, as well as the diverse children’s section. I appreciate the Books to People program, an important consideration to those with mobility issues. I also love the support for visual artists who display their work in the hallway.
What is your vision for the future of this library?
Our library will continue its mission of providing essential services to our neighborhoods and it will be a safe space where residents can congregate, learn new skills or just enjoy the quiet. I envision this library as an integral part of community building, where anyone can feel connected and heard.
