Give back to your community: serve on library board
Two seats on the Bethlehem Public Library board of trustees will be up for election this May. We invite you to think about running. Library board members are stewards of one of the Town’s primary resources. Through the generosity of its tax base, the library is able to provide civic, educational and cultural enrichment in a bright and spacious setting equipped with knowledgeable staff and state-of-the-art electronic amenities A trustee’s term is five years. Meetings are monthly and last an hour and a half to two hours. In addition, a trustee may be asked to serve on a subcommittee or as liaison to the Upper Hudson Library System. The board’s business ranges from budget review and oversight to decisions about the physical plant, policies, and staffing. Trustees help set goals for essential, relevant and high- quality library services for their community, both now and in the future. Beyond the board room, trustees are advocates for libraries. They are aware of issues facing today’s libraries, and the impact of these issues on their library and community. They are willing to share this awareness with neighbors, community leaders and legislators. A library is democracy in a building. It offers free, uncensored access to a whole world of ideas, information, and cultural diversity. It serves all stages and walks of life. You can participate in this democracy, helping to shape your library’s place in the life of your community. Think about it. Candidate packets are available at the information desk. Current board members are Aaron Baldwin, John Sobiecki, Nancy Smith, Tamra Wright, Penelope Koburger, Yolanda Caldwell, and Joyce Becker. Feel free to contact the library director or any board member with questions; call 439-9314 or email. |
