We are currently seeking a creative, enthusiastic and progressive youth services librarian with excellent interpersonal skills who can work well in a fast-paced environment and will support the library’s commitment to providing exceptional customer service. This full-time position includes extensive programming for pre-school and school-aged children and their families and caregivers. Excellent programming and presentation skills appropriate for this age group are essential.
Typical duties:
1. Staffs public service desk as scheduled. Answers reference questions, provides reader’s advisory service, provides instruction in use of electronic resources, interprets library policies and procedures, and resolves patron complaints using independent judgement.
2. Develops and presents programs, story times, book talks, tours, multi-media programs and public access television programming. Participates in outreach services.
3. Participates in selection and other collection development activities.
4. Develops bibliographies, library instructional materials, content for the web page, and web reviews.
5. Promotes library services to schools and community agencies serving children and youth.
6. Identifies grant opportunities.
7. Provides policy and procedural recommendations to the department head.
8. Serves on library committees.
9. Attends conferences, workshops, and meetings; reads professional literature; is aware of new library resources, trends, practices, and technological developments.
10. Performs other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience:
1. MLS from an ALA-accredited program.
2. New York State Public Librarian Professional Certificate.
3. Experience with computer technology and electronic resources.
4. Knowledge of children’s literature.
Physical Requirements:
Frequently lifts, carries or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to 30 pounds. Continual motion/movements, opens/closes materials and continual use of keyboard and associated components in conjunction with duties. Constantly moves about, continually stands, bends, stoops, reaches in order to carry out job duties.
Schedule – 35 hours per week; 9am-5pm daily except 1pm-9pm one day per week and every fifth (5th) weekend Saturday 10am-5pm, Sunday 1pm-5pm (No Sundays during the summer)
Salary - $46,556
Applicants are eligible for permanent appointment if they have a current or previous permanent civil service appointment from a certified list within New York State as a Librarian 1, or if their name(s) appear, and are reachable, on the current Albany County Civil Service Librarian 1 certified list of eligibles.
