Assistant Library Director III

Bethlehem Public Library seeks an experienced, dynamic leader to support many aspects of library administration, working in accordance with prescribed policy while exercising independent judgment and initiative. The Assistant Library Director III will develop grants for library programs and services as appropriate and available, plan and oversee the library’s public service initiatives, act as liaison to the Friends of the Library organization, serve on various library committees and supervise the work of four department heads.


Bethlehem Public Library serves an active community of over 32,000. The library’s mission is to provide equal and uncensored access to resources and services that encourage lifelong learning, cultural enrichment and professional growth.


Typical duties
Recommends policies and procedures to the library director.
Plans, develops and oversees the library’s customer service initiatives.
Develops grants for library programs and services as appropriate and available.
Supervises the work of the department heads.
Collaborates with Director in preparing performance evaluations for department heads.
Represents and advocates for the library at system and state library meetings and before community groups.
Assists in the hiring, training and evaluation of new employees, orients new employees to the library and to library policies.
Assists with the library budget preparation, coordinates the departmental budget requests and makes recommendations.
Participates in the preparation of the annual report to the state and other statistical reports as required.
Is the library’s liaison to the Friends of the Library organization.
Serves on various library committees.
Attends professional conferences and meetings, reads professional literature and is aware of new library trends, practices and resources.
Acts for the director in his/her absence.
Undertakes special projects and performs other duties as requested.


Responsible to – Library Director


Education/Experience/Special Requirement
Possession of a graduate library degree from a library school located within New York State which is registered by the State Education Department or from a library school program which is accredited by the American Library Association and six (6) years of professional library experience, three (3) or more of which must have been in a supervisory or administrative capacity. Possession of a current New York State Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate from the New York State Education Department is required.


Type of Appointment
Provisional (Permanent appointment based upon taking, passing and being reachable on the Albany County Civil Service Exam, Assistant Library Director III). Applicants may be eligible for permanent appointment if they have a current or previous permanent civil service appointment from a certified list within New York State as an Assistant Library Director III.


Salary – $62,347 Initial Rate
